THE 12 (or more) BEERS OF CHRISTMAS ~Mark Janes, Beer Fan
Well, I couldn’t resist. You are singing along in your head now, aren’t you?
“For the first beer of Christmas, my true love gave to me…”
And that was my intention. Thanksgiving and “Black Friday” are behind us. Ahead of us lies the bulk of December, so we begin to kick into full, festive, holiday-high-gear. And what better way to celebrate than with some beers brewed just for the occasion? Whether your December holiday is Christmas or Hanukkah, there’s something for you (though I haven’t yet seen a Kwanzaa-themed beer).
Technically, the “12 Days of Christmas” spoken of in the song lyric don’t start until Christmas Day and ends on January 5th (aka Twelfth Night), the eve of the season of Epiphany on the Christian calendar. But, in this modern world, when retailers try to sell us on Christmas immediately following Halloween (and it seems to get earlier every year), we will have had ample opportunity to enjoy these typically spicy-but-mellow “warmers” by the time Christmas Day rolls around.
So, it probably makes more sense (and a great segue) to begin a celebration of
holiday beers on the heels of Laurie’s November “stouts vs. porters” challenge.
And I think she should continue to sample and write about the holiday brews in this
blog, as well as continue to encourage readers’ support of the Second Harvest Food
Bank of Greater New Orleans (who so desperately need your contributions during the
As Laurie considered the continuation of this blog, and what beer “challenges” might
yet be ahead, I presented my holiday beer theme to her…and here we are! (It wasn’t a hard sell.) She has already secured (or is reasonably sure of) twelve holiday brews to sample in 1-a-day (at least) fashion. There are many more she’d like to sniff-n-sip (perhaps I’ll even get to help) and we’re already at work to add more holiday beers to the sampling list. The “12 days” schedule will begin at the start of Hanukkah, and continue through the 23rd, just short of Christmas eve. So,
after a short break from blogging, Laurie will start anew on the 12th (in terms of
theme, but on this same blog site).
‘Tis the season for good cheer. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate it than with great holiday seasonal beers…and Laurie’s insightful, entertaining reviews! Stay tuned…
