It’s Tripel Tuesday folks. Ring the cowbell. Looking at two Tripels here, along with a visit from a Bruin and Wit, we have a recap of an incredible tasting I attended yesterday. Palate wrecked by the end? Indeedy. Just look at my tasting list! Lets dive into the beers first…
Brasserie Caracole Nostradamus (Bruin) 9.5% ABV: Wait, I seem to have this backward! My first pour of this was the bottom of a bottle, and thus full of yeast sediment. It was, in fact yeasty. My second pour, ahh much better. Fresh from a new bottle, nice auburn brown color. Warm notes of caramel, brown sugar, cocoa, and sweet dried fruit, with an interesting aspect of wet wood. Cleaner notes, of course here. Smooth and well-balanced, no rough edges. This is a Brown after all. An easy, comforting drinker, but watch for that ABV!
Affligem Tripel, 9.5% ABV: Along with the Dubbel, Affligem Tripel is widely known, and is often the first Belgian Tripel tried by beer folks crossing into Belgians. It has a vibrant and fruity nose, with aromas of tropical and tree fruit, sweet candy, citrus, vanilla wafer, and subtle spice (subtle especially after a Mencia from Spain and a Crozes-Hermitage from France!) This to me is an intro Tripel, much like their Dubbel. Great to try, but not terribly complex.
Allagash Tripel, 9% ABV: Completely different from the Affligem, this brew had potent dose of grassiness and hay on the nose, an aspect I tend enjoy in both beer and wine. Mingled into the mix was spice, tropical fruit of pineapple, mango, and banana alongside tree fruit of peach and pear. Light marshmallow aspect on the finish.
Whoa. What an interesting nose. At first, ripe tree fruit, spice, and pepper. Then graphite, naugahyde, and leather. Then the spice exploded. Tons of allspice with citrus peel (nailed exactly by Dr. Bill). The nose just kept developing, and I loved it for that. With a bit of citrus sour on the palate, this is a complex, must try beer for Belgian Wit lovers.

2006 Tinto Pesquera– barnyard, wet earth, silky palate. Wonderful.
2006 Condado de Haza– I love this wine for its aging potential. Juicy, rich fruit now. Bordeaux earth and funk later.
Signorello Padrone-Crazy, rich black fruit. Incredible palate, wonderfully opulent. Literally liquid velvet.
2007 Delas Crozes-Hermitage– I love Northern Rhone. Spice, pepper, meat, and rich, juicy fruit.

The other biggest highlight of the day?
The Octomor 5 year Islay Single Malt Scotch. The most heavily peated Scotch in the world (131 phenolic parts per million!), this guy was AMAZING. Smokey and peaty to the ends of the earth. I absolutely LOVED it. If you liked Brewdog’s Paradox Islay beer as much as I did, this is the hands-down must try of your life. You’ll thank me 131 phenolic times over.
